It’s new year’s day and I have nothing better to do, so why not check out all the PVs for the new season. I don’t speak a word of Japanese, but that’s not going to matter, right?
Sequels are only included if I watched the previous season.
Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale
What I know: “The cheerful daily life of mermaids who try their best every day,” which honestly tells me all I need to know.
What the PV tells me: Yep, it’s definitely about mermaids.
What I expect: Sleep-inducing slice of life show. This is probably not even good enough to excite fans of the genre.
Excitement Level: 0/5 (deep underwater)
Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)
What I know: Boogiepop is a thing that exists.
What the PV tells me: It’s about high school kids, and seems to have a dark tone without being outright edgy. The titular Boogiepop is a girl, apparently. There’s also what looks like some sort of capoeira fighting. I don’t know how that fits in.
What I expect: Dark violent teen drama? Since Boogiepop is one of those things that has been around forever I’m at least interested in finding out what it’s about.
Excitement Level: 3/5 (Boogiepop will still be a stupid name though)
What I know: Girls playing some kind of futuristic VR esport.
What the PV tells me: Immediately starts off with a girl proclaiming she’ll do her best, so that’s not a good sign. The game is just fighting each other with swords on the moon. That’s the most interesting VR sport you could come up with? It looks identical to what you’d see in any magic high school anime.
What I expect: Cookie-cutter action and drama with some tame fanservice.
Excitement Level: 0/5 (Come back when they’re playing Dota)
Dimension High School
What I know: Isekai, except it’s live-action boys transported to an anime world?
What the PV tells me: Yeah, that’s exactly what it is. The real-life acting looks pretty bad, and the 3DCG of the anime world is not much better. I guess it’s a comedy, because it doesn’t seem to be anything else, but I have no idea what they’re talking about.
What I expect: Third rate anime comedy with pretty boys. Probably has a lot of meta-jokes about anime.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (I’d hate to get isekai’d to a world just like this except with a different art style)
What I know: Guy is in love with his teacher and also slept with some other girl, then both of them become his step-sisters.
What the PV tells me: Exactly the above, except in Japanese so I can’t understand it.
What I expect: I’m not sure since the premise sounds like the usual siscon trash but then it looks more like convoluted relationship drama. Thankfully I don’t like either so I don’t have to find out.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (at least they probably won’t call him onii-chan)
What I know: Demon-hunting ronin travels around with a young boy.
What the PV tells me: The main character looks like a moody loner with a dark past. No real demons to be seen in the PV, so maybe it’s more about the characters. The premise sounded mildly interesting, but the PV doesn’t add a lot to that.
What I expect: The boy will teach him to enjoy the little things in life.
Excitement Level: 4/5 (tentatively optimistic)
Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue
What I know: Anti-social writer gets inspiration from his cat.
What the PV tells me: The cat knocks over a pile of books and the one that lands on his face happens to be one he has fond childhood memories of. I guess that’s the extent to which cats can be useful. There’s a lot of blushing and meowing. This PV is actually hilarious if you interpret it as a romance between him and the cat, which is not even hard.
What I expect: Probably not human-cat romance, but nothing else happens in the PV.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (unless it really is about forbidden love)
Egao no Daika
What I know: It’s about a 12-year-old princess and a 17-year old soldier. The soldier smiles a lot. That’s about all I can glean from the summary.
What the PV tells me: There are mechs. The princess also smiles a lot. She looks more like a space idol than a princess.
What I expect: Hard to say, but none of the individual elements particularly excite me.
Excitement Level: 2/5 (meh-ca)
What I know: Girls go to school to learn how to defeat the demon king.
What the PV tells me: Lots of pastel colors and squeaky voices.
What I expect: Typical lighthearted moe comedy.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (can’t even think of a joke)
Girly Air Force
What I know: Girls who are also planes. Or planes who are also girls.
What the PV tells me: Not much else. Maybe the Japanese explains what the deal is. One of the planes is apparently called “BARBIE01”. I can’t even tell if the girl is transforming into the plane or if she’s inside the plane and the plane is just the physical manifestation of her psychic spirit. Either way the planes look silly.
What I expect: Lots military plane trivia, probably also lots of harem tropes.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (don’t really care force)
Grimms Notes the Animation
What I know: “At birth, all inhabitants of this world are bestowed with a “book of fate” where all their lives are written in advance. However, rogue Story Tellers known as Chaos Tellers are writing bad events into people’s books without them knowing.” In other words, it’s a story about Rohan Kishibe.
What the PV tells me: Fuck all. The girls have a magical girl transformation sequence for some reason? It all looks like random fantasy anime elements, almost like.. oh wait, it’s based on a video game, that explains it.
What I expect: Low tier mobile game adaptation, like all of them.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (the future looks grimm)
How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno
What I know: Eccentric genius tries to use her inventions to confess her love for a schoolmate.
What the PV tells me: I didn’t really see any inventions. In fact, I mostly just extreme tsundere action and fanservice. Which is weird, because the art style is so simplified that I really wasn’t expecting all the butt-grabbing, underwear peeks or swimsuit shots.
What I expect: Exactly what’s in the PV.
Excitement Level: 0/5 (maybe you should invent panties that don’t come off easily)
Kaguya-Sama: Love is War
What I know: Two kids are in love, but each wants the other to confess first.
What the PV tells me: Whoa, it’s actually subbed. Why do the subs translate the title of the show differently, though? The show seems to take its premise overly serious (in a good way).
What I expect: Akagi except it’s a romantic comedy. Whether I’ll enjoy this or not will have to come down entirely to execution, because I don’t really care about the romantic comedy part. People generally seem to like this.
Excitement Level: 3/5 (zawa zawa)
Kemono Friends 2
What I know: A true friend wouldn’t watch this
What the PV tells me: Everything looks weirdly off. Which is strange, because the first season didn’t actually look good. Also the video has 11k downvotes.
What I expect: A rehash of the original, trying and failing to capture the same feeling
Excitement Level: 1/5 (no tanoshii)
What I know: Nothing really, but I’m eager to see an original effort by the team that managed to turn Kemono Friends into something watchable.
What the PV tells me: Not a whole lot, since it’s 20 seconds long. The environments look nice.
What I expect: Uhh… I’ve got nothing.
Excitement Level: 3/5 (I have faith in Tatsuki)
Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai
What I know: Girls fly planes, but aren’t planes themselves.
What the PV tells me: It’s 3DCG, but not the really bad kind. Show looks pretty serious. At least, the characters do.
What I expect: Shows like this with an all-girl cast usually set off some alarm bells in my head because they tend to pander to a specific target audience that isn’t me. This one doesn’t have any clear warning signs, so maybe it’ll be all right?
Excitement Level: 2/5 (could be actually good though)
Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka
What I know: Magical girls except gritty and serious, something never seen before in the history of anime.
What the PV tells me: Some guys randomly start gunning down people in the middle of town, but thankfully the heroine stops them before they can shoot any girls. Apparently she’s a retired magical girl brought back to fight a new threat, a concept which would’ve been way more interesting if she was an old woman instead of a high schooler.
What I expect: Every grimdark mahou shoujo show I’ve seen has been a dumpster fire, so bring it on. The worst thing this could be is just boring.
Excitement Level: 2/5 (excited for it to be bad)
Meiji Tokyo Renka
What I know: Otome game adaptation
What the PV tells me: Otome game adaptation
What I expect: Otome game adaptation
Excitement Level: 0/5 (Otome game adaptation)
What I know: Something about otaku culture. Also a game adaptation.
What the PV tells me: Girls. More girls. A girl whose breasts bounce because she smiled. Girls in maid outfits. Transformation sequences, followed by fighting some RPG enemies.
What I expect: Some unholy mix between otaku pandering and video game mechanics.
Excitement Level: 0/5 ()
What I know: Boy is transported 300 years in the future and has to pilot a mech to fight against an ‘unknown enemy’. He also meets a mysterious girl with pink hair, because that’s just what happens in these things.
What the PV tells me: Another 3DCG show. It didn’t look so bad until it showed this woman with dark skin and white lips. Everything else looks exactly like you’d expect from the premise.
What I expect: Tearful mecha action. There’s nothing especially exciting in there, and the main character looks like he’s going to be a useless piece of shit for most of the show.
Excitement Level: 2/5 (could’ve used another revision)
Star Twinkle Precure
What I know: It’s… another Precure show?
What the PV tells me: Nothing, because I didn’t see a PV. I think it’s pretty clear what to expect though.
What I expect: Another Precure show. I don’t have anything against them, but, you know, they’re not really my thing.
Excitement Level: 1/5
The Promised Neverland
What I know: Supposedly actually good? I’ve been recommended the manga but I decided to check out the anime first.
What the PV tells me: A group of orphans live in peace until one day they discover the dark truth about the world. Are the fences there to keep something out, or to keep something in? We’ll have to watch to find out, it seems.
What I expect: The PV seems interesting, but doesn’t make me go ‘whoa I need to watch this’. But given the popularity there has to be something good in there. The only thing that might make me stop watching and read the manga instead are the kid voices.
Excitement Level: 4/5 (has promise)
The Quintessential Quintuplets
What I know: Harem comedy except they’re all sisters.
What the PV tells me: There are five girls with distinct personalities. I thought the first one was supposed to be their mom until I saw them all together. Most of the PV is just character sheets that I can’t read.
What I expect: Wacky hijinx.
Excitement Level: 1/5 (questionable quality)
The Rising of the Shield Hero
What I know: Typical shitty isekai where the protagonist has a really strong power that everyone else thinks is weak for no good reason. Slavery is also involved somehow.
What the PV tells me: Oh of course there’s a fucking HUD because everything has to be a video game now. Production values seem pretty high, higher than it deserves at least. Is the animal girl his slave or does that come later?
What I expect: I can’t even be assed to watch these things for fun anymore because they’re all so similar.
Excitement Level: 0/5 (please log me out)
What I know: Boy wants to become a DJ.
What the PV tells me: Oh no, it’s by GoHands, of Hand Shakers fame. It doesn’t look quite as eye-searing, but there’s still plenty of shots of people fighting with special effects in deserted, rainbow-colored cityscapes. Why they’re fighting is still a mystery. At least it told me that the title is pronounced [wið].
What I expect: Hand Shakers 2.0
Excitement Level: 1/5 (w’zte of time)
Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!
What I know: 4-koma moe comedy
What the PV tells me: I think the word ‘kawaii’ was said at least half a dozen times, so I think that tells you everything you need to know.
What I expect: Injecting moe directly into your veins
Excitement Level: 1/5 (pure sugar)
