You know, for the first half of Chaos Dragon, I thought it was actually kind of… all right? Yeah, it wasn’t breaking new ground, and there was a lot of as-of-yet meaningless setup, but the basic story was simple and reasonable. Former prince of a conquered nation tries to live a normal life, fearing that claiming the throne will just lead to more violence, but is pushed into action by circumstances.
The opening line of the show should’ve been a red flag (“I’ve decided which of my friends to kill”), but still, that couldn’t have prepared me for everything that was to come. Certainly not the terrible tragedy that was the fight animation.
I don’t really know what happened in the second half of the episode. Did the entire staff just sort of give up? Did they read ahead in the script and realize how stupid it was? Some of the animation was so poor it reminded me of Musashi Gun-doh.
This is also where Chaos Dragon takes a turn for the edgy. Innocent civilians are shot to death in tragic still frames. Prince Ibuki’s girl friend is cut down by the bad guy because she was trying to save another boy. This scene, by the way, was unintentionally hilarious. One moment the boy is right in harm’s way, and the next he has seemingly teleported away. Perhaps he magically switched places with the girl.
Ibuki then makes a deal with a Red Dragon who promises him that he’ll save the girl and everyone who died. That was a total lie, though. In fact, Ibuki has to make a sacrifice, and watches helplessly as he’s forced to stab the girl with his sword.
…But she was already bleeding to death, so it wasn’t that great a sacrifice.
Anyway, the show seems to be setting itself up for a bunch of chuuni edginess. The other characters hinted at are all varying levels of ~mysterious~ and the implication seems to be that they’ll be playing a game of “who can avoid getting stabbed to death by Ibuki the longest”.
I’m not exaggerating either. At the end of the episode we’re treated to a picture of the cast, with the girl bluntly crossed out.
I was initially mildly positive, but the tone it set for the rest of the show is little worrying, and the awful animation in the first episode is very worrying. I think I’ll just watch Rokka instead.
First Episode Rating: 5/10
What would it take for me to watch another episode? Being overcome by a sudden fit of edginess
